Three people were killed and several others injured after a microbus carrying a group of Buddhist monks plunged into a roadside ditch in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram this morning.

Abdul Mannan, deputy assistant director of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence in Chattogram, said microbus, travelling from Cox’s Bazar towards Chattogram, plunged into a deep ditch in Chunati Jangalia area after its driver lost control around 9.30am.

“The vehicle was severely mangled upon impact. Three people died on the spot,” he told The Daily Star.

Local residents rescued the injured and took them to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Ruhul Amin, a sub-inspector of Dohazari Highway Police Station, said efforts are under way to identify the victims and contact their families.

“The bodies have been handed over to the highway police for further legal formalities,” he said.

Police said traffic on the busy Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway remained largely normal after the incident. Investigators are examining whether speeding or a mechanical fault caused the crash.
